Rap music is the newest genre of music today. A few decades ago, in the 60s and 70s, rap music was born in New York. This relatively new music genre is now the most popular genre today. This type of music features a high rate of beats per minutes. The rapper does not sing the song but simply says the words in a fast manner of speech. Staples of this genre include rhyming and wordplay. There are many famous rappers that you can listen to today. Gangster rap, mumble rap, dirty rap, etc. are the offshoots of this type of music.
Before rap came, rock was the most popular music genre. The sounds and rhythms of African music is the origins of rock music. In the 50s and 60s, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry included elements of blues, gospel, and soul music to give rock its signature sound in those days. Now, rock is not longer drum-centric but it is primarily guitar-driven.
Popular or pop music is appealing to a greater or wider audience because it is fun and upbeat. Most pop songs are short, repetitive, and has a chorus.
Heavy metal is a very misunderstood genre. It is looked upon as a loud, angry noise. You will be surprised to know that heavy metal has actually come from blues and jazz. The tritone known as the devil’s chord is used by these musicians to create a darker, heavier sound. Listeners of every type of music can have something offered by heavy metal. Some elements of disco and pop music are included into some metal music. Others incorporate jazz fusion, classical, and rock elements into their style of metal.
Punk is the opposite of pop and rock. This type of music is a passionate guitar-drive music with fast beats per minute. It is off-putting and counter-culture.
